Frequently Asked Questions
Why choose aikido?
Aikido is an excellent martial art that emphasizes blending with your opponent in a non-aggressive way.
Do I have to sign a contract?
No contract is required. Members must sign a liability waiver for insurance purposes. Payments are due monthly.
Do I need to buy any special clothing when I first start training?
Beginners can train in sweat pants and t-shirt (loose fitting clothing) until more routine training begins. At that point, students should purchase a gi.
Where can I buy a gi and other supplies?
Someone from the dojo will generally make a trip to Kiyota's in Baltimore to buy supplies. There are also several martial arts supply stores that sell online, see Martial Arts Supplies.
Do you have classes for children?
We do not have children's classes; however, in the past we have had children train with the adults. Sometimes it works and sometimes it does not. Physically it is more challenging. Also, many children prefer to participate in things where there are other children. The best way to see if we're a fit for your child is to visit the dojo with your child.
Do you provide individual classes?
We do not provide private classes for individuals. The dojo philosophy is that group training is more conducive to learning Aikido because you can train with many different partners at many different levels.
Who are the instructors?
Sensei Yvonne Thelwell is the dojo cho and primary instructor. She is assisted by several yudansha students. To learn more about us, see our Lineage.
What are the testing requirements?
Aikido of Arlington test requirements are based on the kyu and dan test requirements of Aikido of San Leandro, run by Pat Hendricks shihan and California Aikido Association Division 1 head. The test requirements are meant to be a guide to help students focus their training. Techniques called during testing will be up to sensei's discretion.
